Few are aware that roller rinks remain a segregated space in America. “Black nights,” now often referred to as “Adult Nights,” can be found in nearly every major city across the country, each boasting a vibrant music and skate scene original to their region, while generations of R&B musicians from Dr. Dre to Queen Latifah got their starts performing at rinks. Phelicia and her five kids sing in the car on their way to their Los Angeles rink. Phelica’s parents raised her on a rink, and now she continues the tradition with her children, but it’s a bittersweet night as their rink is closing its doors.

As roller rinks across the country are replaced by condos and shopfronts, skaters find themselves travelling greater and greater distances to remain connected to their culture, but face discrimination from mostly-white owners and police. Beating the odds, National Skate Parties emerge to preserve the tradition by bringing skaters from across the country to one city, drawing crowds in the thousands.

Thrilling and inspirational, UNITED SKATES matches the freedom and community of skating against the harsh commercial and cultural battles of the contemporary United States. Winner of the Audience Award at Tribeca Film Festival and stylishly directed by Tina Brown and Kauai-native Dyana Winkler, UNITED SKATES is a powerful and entertainment flashpoint of the nation today.
